Welcome to Transitional Living Services |
Transitional Living Services (TLS) is guided by our mission to promote mental health recovery and independence by providing housing, supportive services and advocacy for adults with mental illness.
The vision of TLS is all people with mental illness will be integrated into and accepted by the community.
We accompllish these goals through a comprehensive selection of programs and services, complimented by a strong focus on quality of life. We believe strongly in the value that social, emotional and community support can play in the road towards recovery.
In 1963, the Mental Health Association of Milwaukee began a pilot program to reduce community costs of mental health consumers who were unnecessarily institutionalized by providing them supportive housing and services. The program was extremely successful and thus was born, TLS. TLS was incorporated in 1976 and was established as an independent 501(c)3 organization. Services have since expanded into Waukesha, Washington and Racine counties, making TLS the largest nonprofit provider of community-based mental health services in Southeastern Wisconsin.

Learn about our "Colors of Self" Mural Project
Through a partnership with the Wisconsin Arts Board and the National Endowment for the Arts, TLS is proud to present the"Colors of Self" mural. Artists TLS and the Milwaukee Center For Independence (MCFI) created the mural together with guidance from local visual artist Patricia Obletz.
During a six-week workshop, TLS and MCFI clients worked with Obletz to create their self-portraits, using colors that reflected their "unique individual" and inner being. The project offered clients an opportunity to explore new paths of self-expression and self-revelation through art. The resulting piece consists of 24 original self-portraits assembled into a larger mural.
