 What's new at TLS?

SEASONS GREETINGS FROM TLS!
We would like to thank Jane Steinman for her time and talents
in creating the original artwork for the 2008 TLS Holiday Greeting Card.

Jane Steinman

Jane holds an associate degree in commercial art from the Milwaukee Area Technical College, but, because of her illness, completing that degree became a struggle. She was hospitalized just before graduation day. She managed to stabilize, complete her classes and graduate in 1990.
Jane has received services from TLS for more than 10 years. She attributes her recovery to her passion for art, the help of TLS recovery services and the Donna Lexa Community Art Center classes that she looks forward to attending at TLS each week.
"For so long, I felt like I was at the bottom of the barrel and had low self-esteem because I was sick and not successful in the art industry,” Jane says. “The patience of the instructors for the Donna Lexa class has been so encouraging and helpful to my recovery. They do not stigmatize and encourage me to thrive despite my illness."
Now Jane is finding success in her artwork and has the support and encouragement needed from her family and friends.

'Colors of Self' Mural Project

'Colors of Self', a unique mural project created by individuals with disabilities.  Artists from Transitional Living Services Inc. (TLS) and the Milwaukee Center For Independence (MCFI) created the piece with guidance from local visual artist Patricia Obletz. The project was supported in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.

During a six-week workshop, TLS and MCFI clients worked with Obletz to create their self-portraits, using colors that reflected their "unique individual" and inner being. The project offered clients an opportunity to explore new paths of self-expression and self-revelation through art. The resulting piece consists of 24 original self-portraits assembled into a larger mural.
